Highlights

Located between Ladakh and Zanskar. It is very beautiful and also easily accessible. It is also very popular among the people. You start trekking from Spituk Monastery or Stok village. You first pass the Stok la and then Gandala pass. This will lead you to Markha valley. You get to spend a large amount of time with nature while you are trekking along the Markha river. After that you reach Rumbak, which is the largest village in the Zingchen valley. From there you reach Gandala, the view here is immensely beautiful.

Itinerary

Day
1 Jingchan to Gandala base camp ( 4.380m), 6 hours

Start from Leh and take a jeep to Jingchan. Here the trek starts. Now you reach the river Rumbak, but before that, you have to cross a lot of rivers. Then you reach Yurutse. You get to see some of the beautiful views at Stok la.

2 Gandala base camp (4.380m) to Skiu (3.400m) via Gandala (4.900m), 6 hours

You reach up to Gandala. You can also get to see Yak there. You will also get to see Zanskar range and also the Stok mountains. The path is long while coming back, it is easy to come back to the village Shingo. You can also get to see Marmots on your way. Walk for 3 hours and you Skiu village. This place has some of the beautiful monasteries. 

3 Skiu (3.400m) to Markha (3.700m), 8 hours

This path is also very easy. You will find greenery all around you. You will also have to cross rivers and then you will reach village Chaluk and Tunespa. You get to see some of the best beautiful views while coming back. After 2 more hours, you reach back to Markha.

4 Markha (3.700m) to Tahungste (4.150m), 5 hours

After reaching the village Umlung, before that you will have to cross a lot of crossings. The walk is very easy. After that you reach another village known as Hankar. The place is snow covered. After that you reach Tahungste where you can camp.

5 Tahungste (4.150m) to Nimaling (4.720m), 3 hours

You climb more and then you reach a lake. There you get to see beautiful views as you look down. You also see the pastures that are part of Nimaling.

6 Nimaling (4.720m) to Shang Sumdo (3.660m) via Kongmaru la (5.100m), 7 hours

The climb is very long here till you reach the highest pass of the trek. You reach Kongmaru la. You get to see the beautiful views from there. You reach to Chukirmo. And after that you reach Shang Sumdo.

7 Shang Sumdo (3.660m) to Hemis (3.500m), 4 hours

Before reaching Hemis, a lot of times rivers have to be crossed. Also, the  monastery there is very accessible. From there, you can again go back to Leh.
